A small language tip

Xafa bo'ldingmi?
Ask gently when a friend seems upset. The wording asks whether they became upset; in this conversation, “Are you upset?” is a natural translation.

Ha, biroz xafaman.
Name your feeling in a short sentence. Biroz means “a little”, and xafaman means “I am upset”. You do not have to explain the reason straight away.

Gaplashamizmi?
Offer to listen: “Shall we talk?” Ask whether your friend would like to talk first.

Hozir gaplashgim yo'q.
You can also say “I don’t feel like talking right now.” If a friend says this, give them some time rather than pressing for an explanation.

Try these expressions

Nima bo'ldi?
What happened?

Men seni tinglayman.
I'll listen to you.

Hozir gaplashgim yo'q.
I don't feel like talking right now.

Your turn!

Family & Culture Note

Draw imaginary characters with different feelings and take roles with someone in your family. Ask how your partner feels and whether they want to talk, then wait for their answer. You can practise entirely through the characters without sharing a personal experience.

Talk in a comfortable language about words or actions that each person finds comforting. Include a role in which someone does not want to talk yet, and let the listener practise without pressing for a reason. Try Men seni tinglayman. to offer to listen.
