Shopping at Garden 5 in Seoul: Clothes, Shoes, Sales and Our Family Experience
Shopping for children becomes a little different as they grow older. They begin to develop their own preferences, and finding something they like in the right size is not always easy.
Garden 5 in Seoul is one of the shopping places we visit from time to time, as it is not far from our home. On a pleasant autumn afternoon, we decided to go there again, this time to look for clothes and shoes for my 10-year-old son.
Although we did not end up buying the items we had planned, the afternoon gave us a chance to browse the stores, compare prices, and enjoy some family time. I thought I would share our experience, along with a few practical observations for parents considering shopping at Garden 5.
An Autumn Afternoon on the Way to Garden 5
The weather was lovely that day. On our way to Garden 5, the autumn sky over Seoul looked especially beautiful, with soft clouds surrounding the city skyline. I could not resist taking a few photographs of Lotte World Tower along the way.
Sometimes even a familiar drive feels different when the weather is nice. We had already had lunch, so there was no need to hurry as we made our way to the shopping complex.
Exploring Garden 5 Life
Garden 5 is a large shopping complex in the Munjeong-dong area of Songpa-gu, Seoul. It has different shopping sections, including clothing, shoes, and other retail stores.
This time, we explored the clothing and shoe sections at Garden 5 Life, including NC Department Store. With different brands, shopping areas, and promotional displays, there was plenty to browse.
The shopping complex was busy that afternoon. I noticed many Korean families browsing the stores and walking through the shopping areas. I happened to see only two other foreigners during our visit, although that was simply my personal observation on that day.
One of the recognizable features of Garden 5 is its spacious outdoor courtyard with a distinctive overhead structure. The open area connects the surrounding shopping buildings, and during our visit, there were promotional stalls set up outside.
Shopping for Clothes for a 10-Year-Old
As children grow older, their opinions about what they wear become more important. My son has his own preferences now, so finding something suitable means considering both comfort and the styles he likes.
We browsed the children's clothing sections, including stores at NC Department Store. There were different brands and styles, with clothing racks displaying both regular and promotional items.
There were several items my son liked, but unfortunately, the sizes he needed were unavailable. We continued looking through the stores, hoping to find suitable alternatives, but eventually decided not to buy something simply for the sake of making a purchase.
This is something parents of growing children may recognize. Even when a store has a wide selection, finding the right combination of style, comfort, and size can take time.
Sales and Discounts: Are the Prices Better Than Online?
One thing that stood out during our visit was the number of sale and promotional displays. Some stores advertised substantial discounts on selected items, and there were additional event zones with clothing arranged on promotional racks.
However, when we compared the prices of the items we were interested in with online options, we found that they were quite similar. For the products we considered, shopping in person did not offer a noticeable price advantage.
Of course, this does not mean every sale is the same. Prices and promotions can vary depending on the brand, product, and season. Other shoppers may find good deals, especially when discounted items are available in the sizes they need.
For us, the bigger challenge was not the price but finding the right size.
Looking for Shoes at ABC-MART
After browsing the clothing stores, we also looked for shoes. We visited ABC-MART, where different styles of sneakers and casual footwear were on display.
One advantage of shopping for shoes in person is that children can try them on and check the fit. This can be particularly helpful when they are growing quickly or when different brands fit differently.
Unfortunately, the shoes my son liked were also unavailable in his size. Rather than settling for another pair, we decided to check online.
Why We Chose to Order Online Instead
By the end of our shopping trip, we had explored several stores but had not found the clothes and shoes we originally wanted.
Since the prices were similar to those online and the sizes we needed were unavailable, ordering online seemed like the more practical option.
Still, visiting the stores was useful. We could look at the designs, compare products, and get a better idea of what my son liked before making a purchase.
For parents shopping with school-age children, I think there are a few things worth considering:
- Check online availability if your child wants a particular style or brand.
- Compare the final prices rather than relying only on large discount signs.
- For shoes, pay attention to fit and comfort, not just appearance.
- If ordering online, check the size guide and return or exchange conditions.
These simple steps may help make shopping more convenient, especially when children already know what they want.
A Sweet Break: Hodugwaja and Milk Ice Cream
Although we had already eaten lunch before arriving, we still enjoyed a little dessert during our outing.
We had hodugwaja (호두과자), Korean walnut-shaped pastries, and fresh milk ice cream. Hodugwaja is a popular Korean snack, traditionally made with a walnut-shaped cake filled with sweet red bean paste and walnuts.
I had planned to take photographs, but I completely forgot. I was too busy thinking about eating my ice cream before it melted!
So, unlike the rest of our afternoon, our little dessert break went undocumented. But it was certainly enjoyable.
Is Garden 5 Worth Visiting for Family Shopping?
Based on our experience, Garden 5 is a convenient place to browse different stores, compare clothing and shoes, and explore promotional shopping areas.
During this visit, the shopping areas were lively, with many families and plenty of sale displays. Although we could not find the sizes my son needed, there were still many products to look through.
If you are planning to visit Garden 5 specifically to buy children's clothes or shoes, I would suggest checking the availability of particular items beforehand, when possible. And if you are hoping to find lower prices, comparing online offers may also be worthwhile.
Our afternoon ended without the shopping bags we had expected, but it was still a pleasant outing. We enjoyed the autumn weather, spent time together, browsed the stores, and treated ourselves to something sweet.
Not every shopping trip ends with a purchase. Sometimes, even a familiar place and an ordinary afternoon can become a nice little family memory.
